Is there a difference in marijuana and hemp? Or THC and CBD? The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is removing CBD from its list of banned substances beginning in 2018. According to this article, WADA governs drug testing in the Olympics and sets guidelines for several sporting leagues including UFC. Another article states that WADA will no longer be looking for evidence of CBD use or punishing athletes found to be using CBD, in or out of competition.
“Several studies have shown promise when it comes to the use of CBD for pain relief, especially for chronic pain. Most studies utilize formations of CBD which also contain THC, however, but the FDA hasn’t licensed CBD or THC for use as a painkiller at this time.”…”The creation of CBD oil or CBD supplements involved extracting the CBD from plants containing THC. In some cases, the source is a specific strain of cannabis called hemp, which has minimal amounts of THC, but various other strains of cannabis, some extremely high in THC, can also be used to make CBD formulations.”
“Annually, the Prohibited List review involves a very extensive stakeholder consultation process over the course of nine months,” said Director General Olivier Niggli in his official statement for WADA. “In reviewing the List, experts examine such sources as: scientific and medical research; trends; and, intelligence gathered from law enforcement and pharmaceutical companies in order to stay ahead of those that endeavor to cheat the system.”
For more than a decade, MMA fighter Nate Diaz and his brother have been cannabis advocates for their respected sport. The Diaz brothers should be happy about this news. Nate was given a public warning by the USADA after he admitted to consuming CBD in competition during the press conference. His brother Nick was suspended for five years in 2015 for failing cannabis drug tests.
This study by Oxford Academic explains some of CBD’s role in fighting pain. This study concluded that a “significant analgesic effect was observed”. It showed significant improvements in pain on movement, pain at rest, and quality of sleep. Notably, there was not a noticeable effect on morning stiffness, but the baseline tests for that were low to begin with.
