The Endocannabinoid System and It’s Impact On PTSD

Twenty percent of veterans returning from combat will have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and 77% of children exposed to a school shooting develop PTSD. PTSD accounts for over 5,000 suicides in the US alone because of combat-based PTSD. In fact, PTSD related suicide ranks 10th as a leading cause of death in the US. Unfortunately, less than 50% of people suffering from PTSD are being treated for it. Those are some scary numbers provided by Health Research Funding, but fortunately, there is still hope for these people. June is PTSD Awareness Month, and it is obvious that there needs to be more attention given to this disorder, and potential treatments for it.

Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience has thankfully published extensive research regarding the endocannabinoid system and how it may impact those with PTSD. It begins by stating, “An ideal treatment would be a drug able to block the pathological over-consolidation and continuous retrieval of the traumatic event, while enhancing its extinction and reducing the anxiety symptoms.”

It goes on to say that endocannabinoids regulate affective states and also participates in memory consolidation, retrieval, and extinction. Clinical findings have shown a relationship between cannabinoids and PTSD, “as well as changes in endocannabinoid activity in PTSD patients, further suggest the existence of a link between endocannabinoids and maladaptive brain changes after trauma exposure.”

This study even went as far as to say:

“Along these lines, we suggest that endocannabinoid degradation inhibitors may be an ideal therapeutic approach to simultaneously treat the emotional and cognitive features of PTSD, avoiding the unwanted psychotropic effects of compounds directly binding cannabinoid receptors.”

Considering how many people suffer from this disorder, and how severe it is for many of them, this should be very encouraging. If cannabinoids really have that big of an impact on PTSD, it should be used, or at least considered, as a treatment more often than it is.
