CBD is being shown to help with a multiple variety of issues. Dr. David Allen, a retired cardiac surgeon said in this video, “The endocannabinoid system is the single most important, medical, scientific discovery ever, and will save more lives than the study and application of sterile surgical technique. I’m a heart surgeon saying that.”
The National Institutes of Health estimates that nearly 6% of people with psychotic disorders will commit suicide. So, what if CBD can really help those people with psychotic disorders establish a healthy balance in their life? This would be a change from current antipsychotic drugs. Current medications treat mainly the positive symptoms, and have a low therapeutic efficacy against the negative and cognitive symptoms according to this study by Science Direct.
Alterations in the endocannabinoid system seem to be implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The study claims that “CBD – a nonpsychotromimetic compound of cannabis – emerges as a potential new therapeutic strategy for schizophrenia.
Amazingly, this study goes deeper. It claims that:
“CBD seems able to treat the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, and represents an advance with regard to the existing antipsychotics, since it might also be effective against the negative and cognitive symptoms. Moreover, significant side effects are not seen with cannabidiol treatment. However, despite the auspicious evidence, further clinical and preclinical studies are still necessary to strengthen CBD’s antipsychotic profile.”
One interesting idea to note here is the sentence, “Moreover, significant side effects are not seen with cannabidiol treatment.” Those that have taken pharmaceutical drugs for psychosis are aware of the multitude of side effects that include, but are not limited to: dry mouth, feeling restless or anxious, insomnia, headaches, numbness or tingling of the mouth, trouble swallowing, shuffling walk, severe muscle spasms, incontinence, and memory problems.
Although more research is needed, it is encouraging to see what studies are coming out regarding CBD and psychotic disorders. If Dr. David Allen is correct, there is much to be seen in how this amazing compound of CBD will be used in years to come.
