Homeland Security Seizes Land Rovers – Are You Guilty By Association?

Punished by Association

Even if YOU aren’t doing something wrong, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be punished!

Homeland Security is seizing old Land Rovers – adorned in armor and acting in pre-dawn raids on innocent civilians (what a great use of taxpayer money!), people who are supposed to be protecting Americans from terror are actually terrorizing owners of imported vehicles.

The impetus was that supposedly that these vehicles were illegally imported at one point in their history, but, for the people who purchased them “legally”, they are now out of a vehicle and their investment, thanks to the federal government.  Do you feel like the ‘homeland’ is safer?

This article demonstrates that YOU can face seizure without being the actual cause of illegal activity because the government is after someone else.  A product you bought, or an employer you currently or used to work for, or maybe a neighbor or friend who is now in trouble – YOU are a target too!  So saying you don’t care because you don’t do anything wrong is NOT SMART!  Do you really want the troubles that go along with defending yourself when you are not doing anything wrong?  Here is a great example of being “guilty by association” and the related consequences.   It is already happening and it is just a matter of time before YOU are not “safe enough” to drive.

For instance, let’s say your car is now five years old and the government has declared it a hazard because the air-bags (or whatever) could be faulty and cause an accident.  Let’s say the cost to fix this is larger or a bigger percentage of the value of the vehicle and a recall isn’t going to happen because the car companies have now lobbied to limit recalls so they can stay in business.  It’s just easier to trade in or purchase a safer, newer car – IF you can afford to do that.

This logic is dangerous to your freedom.  It forces you to buy a new car and not a used one!  Most people can’t afford a new vehicle every five years and in fact, your vehicle is worthless as a trade-in.  Remember when the government paid to demolish cars they said were too old and unsafe to be on the road (ah, Cash for Clunkers)?  This hurt the poor and hurt the economy by restricting and removing affordable transportation for tens of thousands of people.  So what happens when the government requires you to buy a car never less than 5 years old?  This leaves leasing as your only viable option – only if you have good “credit” of course.  Or worse yet, the government will force YOU to ride the bus, train or any other public transportation that the government wants you to subsidize.

Some would say this will never happen because the State and federal government need gas tax sales and license plate fees, etc., but understand, that YOU will be taxed in other ways to make up that difference.  It is just going be a shift in how and how much you pay for other things.

We are rapidly approaching self-driving cars and they will be deemed “safer”.  The next step after that is restricting other vehicles that are controlled by you and that you are no longer capable or safe enough to drive.  Your car will be banned or you will be banned from driving.  Do you need a drivers’ license to operate a self driving car?  Maybe not.  But you will need a permit to have one along with the other trappings of forced insurance, parking fees and scheduled maintenance that will be required or your car will not operate.  No more waiving scheduled maintenance or having your car fixed at a local ‘unauthorized’ mechanic.  Fix it or park it, even when it runs fine, it will be programmed to stop running until you take it, or tow it in.  How about being taxed per mile?  Your odometer will be required to be checked (or checked automatically and transmitted like it is on “smart meters” and a fee imposed and assessed –  or again – your car will be locked down.

Car pooling?  Think again.  That’s a business!  You will need permits and authorization and fees paid.

There are so many things philosophically wrong with self-driving vehicles in a free society and the consequences to YOU.  The best solution is to flat out reject buying them.  No sales creates problems for the government and car makers.  The car makers have finally sided with lobbying with the government to force you to buy their product, just like the insurance companies did with health insurance.

The outcome is still unpredictable but ignoring forced government legislation and law seems to be trending in the direction of resistance.  Think I’m wrong?  How many of the 300+ million people in the United States have or signed up for Health Insurance?  To date, two years of promotion (subsidized by YOU) and only 11 million have signed up?

People defy government regulation because it is bad regulation and we are currently free or so we think because ‘we aren’t doing anything wrong’.  Now is the time to vote to change this corrupt and menacing freedom of choice.  For the moment, you have the freedom to do that!

BOUGHT: The Hidden Story Behind Vaccines, Big Pharma & Your Food – Review

Money, also known as the root of all evil, is undoubtedly the driving force that runs the world today. Thus, it is the driving force behind every industry; and yes, medicine and our food is controlled by an industry, more accurately, a profit driven industry. BOUGHT explains why and how our food and medicine is just like any other corporate driven industry. Padding the profit margins and producing for the shareholders takes priority over the health and well being of the consumer.

BOUGHT is 90 minutes, jam-packed full of facts and unique perspectives from whistleblowers, former sales agents, doctors, scientists and professors. The information they share is powerful; for instance, one topic the film explores throughout the documentary is the recent epidemic of chronic illness in adolescents. We learn as the film goes on the various connections that food and current medical standards have in perpetuating chronic illness. We also learn how the federal and local governments have safeguards in place to protect corporate entities, like pharmaceutical companies, from facing liability due to vaccine harm. Vaccines are a major focus in the film, and it provides some compelling evidence and thoughts as to why the link to autism and various other neurological disorders should not be ignored. The film notes how yearly profits are extremely high for pharmaceutical companies, particularly for the four companies that are the major vaccine producers. Safety concerns are easy to ignore when profits are in the billions. For example, Johnson&Johnson was forced to pay over $2 billion in fines for improper marketing of a drug, a drug for which they made $44 billion in profit.

Another major focus of the film is GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Like many documentaries before, Monsanto is noted as a usual suspect. BOUGHT however, does not solely focus on the nefarious company, but mainly on the fact that the governing laws surrounding GMOs are too heavily influenced by industry and regulation of this industry is controlled by the same corporate executives who are also set to gain profit. BOUGHT admits that the answers to the real long term effects of GMOs on our health are still unclear, but this is mainly due to how the industry is protected from doing real research to prove safety. Yet another example how regulation is always profit driven is the fact that 64 other countries have GMO labeling laws while the U.S. has yet to set a national standard. Perhaps the food industry in those 64 other countries are not bought.

It almost feels hopeless to think that our health and well being are bought, but hope is not lost as long as we continue to be vigilant in seeking food and medicine freedom.

10th Amendment Musings

I again became aware of how little use the 10th Amendment is to states who have no power over their own commodities and currency.

Fresh off the presses, How Race to the Top is re-writing US Education, gives us just another example of the legal blackmail that occurs frequently in our great country.

When an elected official proudly states, for news publication, the following, I question our hopes of realizing solutions:

“These are my best hopes,” he said in May. “You see people doing things that a year ago they said they would never, ever agree to.”

More Security Headed Your Way

Pending legislation in the form of Senate Bill S 773 Cyberspace Security Act of 2009 is another example of sacrificing our liberty for security.   Broad guidelines coupled with more government (and hence spending) added to a short list of who gets to decide the definition of “emergency” and “critical” in regards to shutting down telecommunication networks leads me to vocal opposition.

If your livelihood depends on the internet or if you just enjoy keeping in touch with family and friends and perhaps spouting your opinions publicly, then I urge you to Learn More about this proposed legislation.

The Dangers of Silent Consent

“First they came for the Communists but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews but I was not Jewish so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me” Martin Niemoller

Yes, I know – there are those of you who despise my use of Hitler and the Nazi regime as metaphors for current events.   In my defense, I truly believe in “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”, courtesy George Santayana.  And that motto guides much of my daily activities and decisions on what course of action to pursue.

So I point your attention in the direction of the woes experienced by Grazin’ Acres dairy farm in Wisconsin.  Who cares that your impassioned letter or email may not be read by those interfering with food production/consumption and private contract issues?   The sheer volume of written protest is our attempt to let those who engage in these behaviors know they do not have our Silent Consent.

Immigration Reform

By Tamrah Jo Ortiz

Via my email inbox, I was alerted to the existence of proposed legislation regarding the Illegal Immigrant issue.

I faithfully read the entire email which assured me I’m about to be stripped of every freedom I have, via a Biometric National ID card.

Just as faithfully, I visited OpenCongress to get the real story.   I have a history of being led astray and set right by Snopes, so I do more research now.

I was unable to find much at OpenCongress….granted, my searching skills are not at the Advanced level.

So, Google it is and lo and behold, here’s an article by Charles E. Schumer and Linsey O. Graham – creators of the whole plan. I’m figuring this is the real deal, straight from the horse’s mouth (or arse, if you will..)

I got as far as the fourth paragraph before I quit reading and started blogging… Here’s the sentence where I stopped:

Our plan has four pillars: requiring biometric Social Security cards to ensure that illegal workers cannot get jobs;…”

OMG!   The email I got was True!

Hold on.  I’m speechless.   Taking a minute for me to recover…

Okay, I’m back.

I’m aware of the hotly debated points regarding Illegal Immigration – in my mind, these protests are filed right along side, “Why are we allowing exportation of customer service jobs to India?”

But I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if I’ll support having my individual freedoms tramped all over in an effort to ‘save me’ from the evils of under or un-employment.

In short, I value my freedom above my security.

Sound Familiar?

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” –  Ben Franklin.

My second favorite followed link regarding this topic is this cartoon (captioned by):

For those opposed to having their fingerprints, retina scans, DNA or other bodily information housed in some big old database somewhere, in order to ensure they don’t have to compete with those who will work hard for minimum wage, you can go here to sign a petition.

Granted, the Campaign For Liberty now has my name and zip code in addition to my email, but hey, what the heck?  I have a GPS enabled smartphone and recently registered to vote – Jack Bauer from CTU already knows how to find me…

Remembering History

By Tamrah Jo Ortiz

I attended the Colorado Sky Sox ball game last night.   First time my husband has accompanied me to a baseball game since we first started dating.   Mainly because I accidentally cheered for the wrong team. (Hey, with so much going on, I forgot who was up to bat.  I did cover myself by saying, “Booo!  He was safe!” but my husband-to-be was not fooled…)

Before last night’s game,  Hubby asks if I know who Goose Gossage is. (seems his smartphone told him it was Goose Gossage night…)

(Note – Part of my Soul’s Heroic Mission this go-around is to appear a complete dumb arse in regards to sports, so by turns, I teach the males in my circle tolerance and give them a laugh when needed.   I’ve learned to play my role realllyyyy well!)

“Of course,” I reply.  “He was the co-pilot for Tom Cruise in Top Gun.”

It got the desired reaction – laughter and eye-rolling.

Then I informed him that Goose was a great ball player and a few years back – he had done something pretty spectacular… broken a record or something, because I remembered hearing about some fantastic accomplishment….

Hubby disagrees.

At the game, I’m proven right.   Goose Gossage was the 199th player to be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

This whole story is told to my mother, who joined us for a night of All-American entertainment.  She reminds me of  my past sports faux pas.  (aka Fox Passes, in our family….)

And also points out how many times I’ve lost Trivial Pursuit games simply by not having the orange pie…(you guessed it, Sports and Leisure – on the bright side, I used to bartend, so if my questions fall more in the “Leisure” category, I win…)

During a general “Let’s make fun of Tamrah’s ignorance regarding sports” melee I finally had to speak up in defense.

“Hey!  Do you all know what absolutely critical-to-our-freedom-event occurred on the night of August 29, 1776?”

I’m met with silence.   Smug in my genius, I relay why they should really know about this.

In the evening hours General George Washington set about evacuating his Continental Army across the river to Manhattan.   Following the Battle of Long Island losses and the current reality that places him nearly surrounded by enemy forces, he calmly calls for all available water vessels, orders wagon wheels muffled and soldiers to march silently.   He charges Quartermaster General Thomas Mifflin with rear-guard duties.   In other words, Mifflin and his boys are to keep all the campfires going.

Across the way, British General Howe understands he has Georgie boy surrounded.  He does not press his advantage.   Why further demean a hapless and hopeless opponent?   Instead, he gives his foe the night to accept defeat and pen his eloquent surrender speech.    His scouts report all is quiet, campfires are going and the enemy is not up to any funny business.

The retreat, hindered by mis-carried orders instructing Mifflin to abandon his post too early and aided by a late morning fog, is successful.  By mid-morning on August 30th, General Howe stands surveying empty American fortifications, puzzled as to just how his surrounded quarry managed to escape.

The bulk of the Continental Army (around 9,000) had been safely snatched from the jaws of total ruin and/or capture.

In large part to the distraction of peaceful campfires.

I’m not discounting the accomplishments of sports figures.    But in my mind, knowing the above story is more important than knowing who-broke-what-record.

Simply because, it gives me time to reflect on and ponder the extraordinary effort put forth by our forefathers in the quest for Freedom.   By delving deep into the history of our Revolution, I see how many times our cause was on the brink of being lost.

I am deeply touched by stories of those who marched in snow without shoes, fought battles with nothing more in their stomach than boiled shoe leather and how, even in those days, office politics abounded.

Knowing George managed to keep his post AND win the war, in spite of gossiping, negative, incompetent back stabbers trying to get him fired nearly the entire time, reassures me great things can be accomplished, even if the cause you’re joining is peppered with the lazy, power-hungry and traitorous.

I’m also intrigued by the campfire ruse.

I see a lot of campfires around these days – lit and tended to distract us from the real issues.

I really don’t want to be on the side that got distracted….

So, I’ll continue in my evil ways of teaching true sports fans tolerance.   I’ll continue to forget what a balk is, why pinch hitters are necessary and why yelling, “Quit diving for the ball” at an opposing fielder who has done the extraordinary time after time tonight is met with silence and glares.   Sports fans like seeing great plays, even if they are by the opposing team.

On the flip side, did you know Lynne Cox trained both her body and mind to swim the Bering Strait?  Amazing what the human body and spirit can do…

WALK THE TALK – Support Local

It’s easy to tell people what they should do.  It’s easy to say what you are going to do.  But actually doing something is a whole other level, and the level that we need to be at to really make sustainable changes with anything.

Simply a rant against people who talk but don’t walk?  Perhaps.  Or perhaps a reminder that we all need a reminder to do things.

Supporting local means trying to source products and services from someone imediately in your community – meaning that person is alive and operating in that community.  A local farmer or gardener grows produce there, a local shop-keeper has items that he or she resells there, a local brewer makes their beer there, a publication houses writers and advertisers there.

It is hard to purchase everything local – so don’t try doing that.  To start, try one or two things, and then build as you go – that is generally more sustainable for those of us who work for a living.

It all starts somewhere, but it must start – we make the difference, and we must walk the talk.

The Answer is Civic Culture, Sustainability, Local Economy and Community

Lance Benninghoff

As I’m researching and writing my master’s thesis concerning economic development, I’m becoming more convinced that the current economic and political system is in dire need of change and innovation. A survey of the latest headlines and the economic recession are proof that the current systems are not working as intended. However, the key idea for people to keep in mind is that rather than sink down into a pathology of despair and helplessness, the time of crises is an opportunity to innovate and come up with new and creative solutions to our problems. The current situation doesn’t have to be this way.

Why is this? The answer lies in the recognition that economics, politics, law and public policy are socially constructed.  They are not monolithic abstract concepts immune from change. Rather, they are driven by individuals whose interpersonal relationships develop into social networks whose internal and external relationships create social structures at the local, state, national and global scale.

Relating this to the local level, of which I am most interested, it is important to acknowledge that economics and geopraphy do not serve solely as determinants of which communites fail or succeed. Rather, civic culture composed of local leadership and community social structure, in addition to the policies they implement, are what truly determine the success of communities.

Economics and geography, while important, merely serve as part of a contextual framework to which local leadership and community social structures adopt policies in reaction to these influences. This explains why cities with the same geography, demographics and governmental structure often adopt divergent policies and thus have divergent policy outcomes. In essence, its people and personalities that  utlimately determine allocation of scarce resources and this changes over time as well as can be changed.

Understanding the civic culture of a community is critical to implenting local economic development policies based on sustainability, local economy and community as outlined by Joseph Ciadella in his article, Debating Detroit’s Redevelopment, that I agree are necessary to create a successful community. I shall enlarge on these ideas in further articles.

Benninghoff is currently working with the Otero (Colorado) County Commissioners and County Administrator and learning to become a future City Manager/County Administrator. He currently belongs to the International City County Manager’s Association and the  Colorado City County Manager’s Association. He is also working on his Master’s Thesis which is the Economic Development Policy for Otero County.  This will look at strategies encompossing sustainability and internally developing the local economy.

Get Out of Our House

By Richard A. Correa Sr. SGT  RIARNG Retired

If you are a sitting member of the United States House of Representatives then you need to GOOOH (Get Out of Our House). This is the message to United States representatives from GOOOH members from all over this great country. And the members of GOOOH, working with those who are concerned about the direction this nation is headed, are going to do all we can to cause these 435 professional politicians to be looking for new jobs come January 2011.

GOOOH is one of the many grassroots organizations that have sprung up since 2008. It is non-partisan and owes no allegiance to any political party. Its members come from all walks of life, all political persuasions, and they all have one thing in common – they are tired of seeing the professional political class that has a strangle-hold on the US Congress, looting the treasury to enrich themselves and their cronies while hardworking Americans foot the bill. They are tired of the corruption of our representatives and senators, and fed up with the special favors to those that keep them in power. And they will no longer allow these voracious scavengers to ignore the will of the people while they pander to the special interests that leach off the federal treasury.

So how does GOOOH plan to change all of this? By organizing groups of citizens in each congressional district to challenge the professional politicians and replacing them with citizen legislators. A daunting challenge to be sure, but as the recent gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, the recent senatorial election in Massachusetts, as well as the close election in New York’s 23rd congressional district show that it can be done.

By using the internet, social networking groups like Facebook and messaging applications like Twitter, GOOOH has been able to organize a network of dedicated volunteers in every state, county and congressional district. These volunteers are reaching out to their fellow citizens (at work, at play, or at home) to garner support and recruit new members. And the response from our fellow citizens has been very positive.

I have been honored with the responsibility of being the state coordinator for GOOOH in the state of Colorado. I have been in contact with hundreds of Coloradans to create the state level leadership group and the many district groups. While the organization of this is still in the initial stages, so many of the folks I’ve written to and spoken with have volunteered to help.  In the work that I do,  I find myself humbled by peoples’ responses and efforts to change how things are done in our country.

As GOOOH continues to move toward the goal of replacing the professional political class with citizen legislators we ask all Americans to consider what we propose. The United States of America is a great nation because of its people, not the politicians or the government policies they espouse. Our best days are still ahead of us and this nation will return to the prosperity we have experienced when we replace the entrenched incumbents in Washington with citizens like yourselves, who will use common sense in carrying out the duties of US Representatives.
